Even though he is still in a virtual tie with Trump, almost half of Democrats think President Joe Biden should drop his reelection campaign due to his disastrous debate performance. The poll was issued on Thursday.
The Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll found that 67% of Americans and 56% of Democrats think Biden should step down “given his performance in the debate.” At an all-time high, 85% of Americans think Biden is too elderly for a second term, while 60% say the same of Trump. Among all registered voters, 46% support each man, which is very little change from the April survey.
The Pew Research Center released a fresh poll on Thursday that did little to improve Biden’s position; it found that, among registered voters, Trump leads the incumbent by a margin of 50% to 47%. Since April, when Pew found that 49% supported Trump and 48% selected Biden, the gap between the two has grown slightly.
These new results arrive as Biden and his campaign, already in a state of crisis from the June debate, are under intense pressure to provide evidence that Trump can still lose to the president. Despite Biden’s campaign rallies, media interviews, and letter to Hill Democrats arguing that he is still in the race, an increasing number of Democratic lawmakers and contributors are demanding that he retire.
There are other facts in both polls that will not calm down the frantic elected Democrats whose support for the president is on the brink of collapse, even though Biden’s favorability and approval rating have remained stable and are better than Trump’s.
The discussion has damaged Biden’s perceived mental and physical fitness, and half of Americans think less positively of him as a result, according to the Post poll: From April onwards, Trump’s margin over Biden has grown to 30 percentage points in terms of mental sharpness and 31 percentage points in terms of physical health.
The percentage of registered voters who describe Biden as “mentally sharp” is much lower than that of Trump (58% vs. 24%), according to Pew’s assessment of the candidates’ perceived fitness.
More than a third of Americans believe that Biden is more trustworthy and honest, better represents their values, and understands their concerns compared to Trump, according to the Post survey. This bodes well for Biden’s campaign. Still, even those solid numbers for Biden are down from where they were four years ago. Furthermore, 63% of respondents to the Pew survey found Trump and Biden to be “embarrassing.”.
There is division within Biden’s alliance regarding how the contest will go in his absence. According to the Post poll, 85% of Black Democrats and 70% of Democratic-leaning independents would be pleased with Vice President Kamala Harris as the nominee. However, when asked an open-ended question about potential replacements, only 29% selected her. Next in line, with 7% of the vote, is California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is far behind Harris.
There is a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points in the online survey of 2,431 American adults that was carried out by the Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos from July 5-9. An online survey of 9,924 adults in the United States was carried out by the Pew Research Center from July 1st to the 7th. The margin of error for this survey is plus or minus 1.3 percentage points.
