Chris Christie is aware of Donald Trump’s motivations.
This is why it’s important to pay attention to the former governor of New Jersey and erstwhile Trump loyalist as he explains why he believes the former President retained sensitive documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence after leaving the White House.
During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Christie stated, “I believe it’s much more likely that they’re a trophy, that he walks around and says, ‘Look, I’ve got this, I’ve got this classified paper or that.” Remember, he finds it hard to comprehend he is not the president. He still hasn’t received these paperwork, which amazes him. And he wants to prove to everyone that he still has some of those trappings by showing up to Bedminster or Mar-a-Lago during the summer.
which is really fascinating!
I believe that a common misconception among many people, particularly among certain Democrats, is that Trump saved a variety of sensitive materials because he was (or is) up to something sinister.
I find Christie’s proposal to be much more believable.
Consider the fact that a lot of what Trump does is done for show. He cares more about how people see things than how they truly are.
Or to put it another way, he has lived his entire life as “Donald Trump.” And his four years as president were the pinnacle of that long career. He simply won’t accept—or is unable to—that he no longer possesses that authority and influence.
He still promotes conspiracy theories about election fraud because of this. And that is the reason he still acts like the president, at least to his supporters. It keeps the impression that Trump is still in charge on some level to be able to say, in the course of a conversation, “I’ve got this classified paper,” to use Christie’s words. He can still behave (and, more crucially, be recognised) as president since he still has the prerogatives of the office, at least in his own opinion.
To be clear, the ongoing Department of Justice inquiry into Trump’s preservation of those records is essentially unrelated to the reasons why he chose to preserve secret materials at Mar-a-Lago. The DOJ probe is more focused on the “what” than the “why” of Trump’s actions.
Christie’s remark, however, is essential for gaining insight into Trump’s psychology. Trump has a strong desire to maintain his presidential persona. He sounds and appears important because of the retention of sensitive papers.
Once more, Trump is much more concerned with how things LOOK than how they ARE. Never has, never will.
