Two Republican sources told AWN that Kevin McCarthy was the driving force behind interim Speaker Patrick McHenry’s decision to remove previous Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Majority Leader Steny Hoyer from their offices.
On Wednesday, Republican Representative Garret Graves told reporters that McCarthy will be taking over McHenry’s old seat.
That office Pelosi is sitting in right now belongs to the previous speaker. The Democrats, led by Speaker Pelosi, have chosen Kevin McCarthy as their new speaker. So,” he concluded, “he’ll be moving into my office.
It was payback, according to sources close to Pelosi and Hoyer, for Democrats voting with McCarthy to resign as speaker on Tuesday. The back rooms are conveniently positioned close to the House floor.
Requests for comment from McCarthy and McHenry’s were not met with a response.
When asked who was to blame for McCarthy’s defeat, Graves pointed the finger at Democrats.
It’s unclear to Graves what exactly they’re upset about. “They brought this on themselves.”
On Tuesday, Pelosi said that McHenry had told her to leave her Capitol office. The Cannon House office building is where she regularly works. Around 6:15 PM, McHenry’s staff sent an email to Pelosi’s office. A message sent out Tuesday night and seen by AWN read, “Going to reassign h-132 for speaker office use.” Leaving tomorrow would be greatly appreciated.
In a statement, Pelosi explained that she was not currently in Washington, DC, in order to pack up and go promptly.
One of the first things the new Speaker Pro Tempore did was force the California Democrat out of his office in the Capitol, he claimed. “With all the important decisions that the new Republican Leadership must address, which we are all eagerly awaiting,” he added. Unfortunately, I am in California at the moment to grieve the loss of my beloved friend Dianne Feinstein and pay tribute to her.
After months of worsening health, Feinstein, who served in the Senate for 30 years and was the longest-serving female US senator in history, passed away last Thursday at the age of 90. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, so on Wednesday, her body will lie in state at San Francisco City Hall.
According to Pelosi’s statement, the “eviction is a sharp departure from tradition,” and she added, “As Speaker, I gave former Speaker Hastert a significantly larger suite of offices for as long as he wished.”
Having a nice office isn’t a priority for her, but it is for them. Now that this major issue has been resolved, the new Republican leadership may hopefully focus on the issues that matter most to the American people.
On Wednesday, Hoyer’s staff confirmed to AWN that Hoyer had been forced out of his Capitol basement office by the House Republican leadership.
The House Administration Committee, which is in charge of office space, did not make this request, according to a Republican aide, as reported by AWN.
McHenry’s actual title is “speaker pro tempore,” which means he has the authority to break or adjourn the House of Representatives and recognise candidates for the position of speaker.
Speaker McCarthy was obligated under House rules to provide the clerk with a private list of individuals “in the order in which each shall act as Speaker pro tempore in the case of a vacancy.” McHenry, a staunch supporter of McCarthy, topped the list.
