With President Joe Biden visiting Pennsylvania this week, Donald Trump’s super PAC airs a new attack ad slamming his immigration policy. This comes as Trump spends most of the week in New York court. It’s the first time the PAC has been on air in over a month.
By making immigration a central issue in the 2024 campaign, Trump and his Republican allies intend to take advantage of voters’ dissatisfaction with the legacy of the Biden administration. The Senate will explore articles of impeachment against Alexander Mayorkas, Biden’s homeland security secretary, whom they have criticized for his handling of the southern border. The commercial began airing on the same day.
An immigrant who was in the country illegally attacked and killed a 20-year-old autistic woman in Maryland in 2022; the new commercial from the Trump super PAC highlights this case and places the blame on “Biden’s weak border policies.” Last year, the matter was probed by the House Judiciary Committee, which is chaired by Republicans. The committee’s findings indicated that the individual responsible had entered the US without being adequately vetted by the Biden administration.
An undocumented immigrant who is a known member of the dangerous MS 13 gang viciously raped and murdered an innocent girl, the new advertisement begins. There was a way to avoid it. Although the murderer was apprehended at the border, Biden’s lax border policy allowed him to be freed and reenter our streets.
“By releasing criminal illegals into our communities, Biden’s open border puts us all at risk,” it continues. “We must refrain from allowing Joe Biden to seal off our borders.”
Republicans have been pushing to impeach Mayorkas for some time, and this high-profile case is just one of many reasons why. On Wednesday, the Senate will take up the case, but the Democratically controlled chamber is expected to dismiss the charges swiftly, despite Republicans’ demands for a full trial.
After nearly 150 years, Mayorkas becomes the first Cabinet secretary to face impeachment. House Republicans narrowly failed to impeach Mayorkas in February for his handling of the southern border, following their first unsuccessful attempt.
There has been defense of Mayorkas’ record from the Biden administration. In a statement issued after the House vote, the White House leveled accusations of “unconstitutional partisanship” and “petty political games” on House Republicans, while praising Mayorkas for her “deep commitment to the values that make our nation great” and her “faithful upholding of the rule of law.”
However, in reaction to the Republicans’ scathing criticism, the administration has adopted stricter border measures, such as asylum limitations and the closure of the US-Mexico border during migrant surges, thus hardening immigration policy.
This is MAGA Inc.’s second advertisement since Trump won the Republican presidential nomination, and their first since mid-March. During the presidential primaries, advertising from Trump’s campaign and super PAC frequently brought up the topic of immigration, reflecting the team’s consistent messaging on the subject.
Additionally, the pro-Trump super PAC is increasing its ad spending after being mainly silent since late January during the nomination contest’s final days. Almost all of MAGA Inc.’s $1.4 million in airtime reservations this week are in Pennsylvania, so the new commercial will run simultaneously with President Biden’s campaign trip through the Keystone State. MAGA Inc. is also busy this week with a few smaller reservations in Georgia and Wisconsin. Advertising expenditures by MAGA Inc. total more than $42 million since the 2024 presidential campaign began.
