In the aftermath of the weekend’s strategic airstrikes inside Iran, many Democrats have revived their demands to remove President Trump from office.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York is among those spearheading the current effort to impeach the president. She has characterized the military action as “unconstitutional” and “illegal.”
On the other hand, prominent Republicans are standing by Trump’s choice to use action against Iran, claiming that Democrats are politicizing a matter of global security.
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy warned on Tuesday’s “America’s Newsroom” that anyone who brings up the idea of impeachment would be ridiculed in the future. The drive, he said, was politicized, and those who opposed the attacks were “hypocrites.”
“He [Trump] has impulsively risked launching a war that may ensnare us for generations,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X on Saturday night, as she went to social media. There can be no doubt that this constitutes grounds for impeachment.
“The President of the United States admitting that he unilaterally brought the United States into a war without congressional approval is a very grave public admission,” the representative told reporters on Capitol Hill Monday. Breaking the law is not an option. The Constitution forbids it.
The need for congressional consent prior to initiating such a massive military strike is being raised by several Democrats. The Trump administration has refuted their argument that the bombings were a declaration of war.
McCarthy has completely ignored Ocasio-Cortez’s point, implying that her party is against the strike just because Trump is behind it.
“They just get a Trump syndrome,” McCarthy announced. “What President Trump is able to accomplish has reset the world stage, had made the world actually safer.”
On Saturday, American planes attacked Iranian nuclear facilities and other strategic military installations. Months of fruitless talks with Tehran over the latter’s uranium enrichment program led to the decision.
Some, like McCarthy, argue that the president may act independently of Congress, citing the actions of Obama and Biden as examples.
“Every president before him has looked to make sure that Iran does not get a nuclear weapon,” he added. “He just carried that out.”
However, not every Democrat is on board with the impeachment movement. On Monday’s “America’s Newsroom,” Senator John Fetterman stated that the impeachment process would serve no useful purpose and would be completely useless.
Everyone here knows it, even Ocasio-Cortez. According to him, the impeachment calls are going nowhere. “If you throw that term around, that actually diminishes the severity of what impeachment is really reserved for.”
Some Democrats in Ocasio-party Cortez’s have broken ranks to applaud Trump for his bold moves in the Middle East, so it’s not certain if her repeated demands for impeachment would receive support.
There were two impeachment proceedings against the president during his first term, but with Republicans controlling the House, it’s doubtful that another one would be successful.
McCarthy stated that Democrats should support the elimination of global dangers rather than concentrating on yet another impeachment campaign.
“Democrats are on the wrong side of history,” he pointed out. “They should build together, make America stronger, and the world a better, safer place.”
