Diplomatic Tension Rises: Why China Is Furious About JD Vance's "Peasants" Remark

U.S. Vice President JD Vance claimed last week in an interview with AWN that the US borrows “money from Chinese peasants to buy the things those Chinese peasants manufacture.” In response, China is taking Tuesday off.

On “Fox & Friends,” Vance made the comment while discussing how the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration had affected the United States.

I believe it’s beneficial for everyone to take a step back and wonder: what has the United States of America gained by its participation in the multinational economy? The answer, according to Vance, “is based on two principles.” The first is taking on massive debt to purchase goods and services produced by other nations. The second is, to be more explicit, borrowing money from Chinese peasants to purchase goods and services manufactured by those same peasants.

Upon being questioned about Vance’s remarks made on Tuesday, Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, expressed dismay and surprise at the Vice President’s lack of understanding and decency.

“China has made its position perfectly clear on its trade relations with the U.S.,” said the official.

In response to AWN Digital’s request for comment, the White House did not immediately provide one.

As tensions between the US and China over tariffs continue to rise, China criticized Vance on Tuesday.

Keep in mind that everyone predicted that Trump’s tariffs would lead to inflation during his first presidency. In reality, we had the fastest-growing economy in a generation and inflation of 1.5 percent. “And the United States of America had the beginnings of a manufacturing renaissance,” Vance told AWN. “Then, of course, we had four terrible years of the Biden administration.”

“Manufacturers have been shutting down. Inflation has been on the rise. In addition, he mentioned that the majority of Americans are now unable to purchase a home due to the exorbitant cost of housing. The economy is being led on a new path by President Trump. He relied on that. That was his word. And now the delivery is happening.
