Inside the Surprising Defense of Zelensky Coming From an Unexpected Republican Source

Some members of his party have called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to resign, but Republican James Lankford of Oklahoma has stated that he disagrees with this view.

After the contentious meeting between Trump and Zelensky, Lankford appeared on Sunday’s “Meet the Press” on NBC to talk about the discussion and the accompanying demands for a new leader in Ukraine from GOP leaders.

“I disagree,” he declared. It is not my intention to demand the resignation of other heads of state. Chuck Schumer’s call for Netanyahu’s removal was unacceptable to me. It annoys me when other senators want Zelensky’s resignation as well.

After Zelensky’s ouster, “spiral Ukraine into chaos,” according to Lankford.

He made the observation that, despite the disastrous outcome of their encounter, Trump and Zelensky had clearly had fruitful discussions in the past. Questions over Trump’s tight relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin have arisen in light of his leadership of the United States and the peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

Trump met with Zelensky first, according to Lankford. As a whole, everyone was collaborating with the Russians. He preferred to meet with Zelensky face-to-face first.

According to him, it’s evident that he stands firm on this issue.

Lankford made these remarks following last week’s controversial encounter between Trump and Zelensky, which, in an unprecedented turn of events, escalated into a furious confrontation. Trump criticized the president of Ukraine as “disrespectful” and Vice President Vance said that Trump did not show enough gratitude for Trump’s assistance during the meeting.

Late last month, Zelensky stated his intention to resign as president in order to bring about a permanent peace in Ukraine.
