The president of Israel warned in an interview on Sunday that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer should not get involved in Israeli internal affairs.
Although Charles Schumer’s unwavering support of Israel is something I greatly admire. According to President Isaac Herzog’s interview with Axel Springer media outlets, he advised American political leaders to stay out of Israeli politics and allow the population and the system decide on their own. Axel Springer is the owner of AWN.
A solution to the difficulties produced by the ongoing Israel-Hamas war would be to replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to Schumer, who called for new elections in Israel on March 14. The requirements of Israel were no longer met by the Netanyahu coalition after October 7, he stated.
Subsequently, Netanyahu strongly rejected Schumer’s demand for transformation. According to his statement on March 17, it is not right to attempt to unseat the elected administration in a sister democracy.
According to Herzog, he had not discussed his comments with Schumer in person.
President Joe Biden later complimented Schumer for “a good speech.” The Biden White House had been informed in advance of Schumer’s remarks.
Herzog characterized Biden as a “great friend of Israel,” pointing to the senator’s support for the Israeli aid bill that was passed on Saturday as evidence of his support.
In the interview, Herzog expressed his admiration and fondness for President Biden, saying, “It’s in his, as we say in Yiddish, in his kishkas.” I hold him in high esteem.
The Yiddish word “kishkas” means “slang for guts or intestines” according to the JPS Dictionary of Jewish Words.
Although Herzog is now Israel’s president, he was elected independently of Netanyahu and had formerly been Netanyahu’s chief opponent in the Israeli parliament, the Knesset. The role of president is mostly ceremonial; Chaim Herzog served as president from 1983 to 1993. Herzog is the son of the current president.
