The massive bill that the Republican-controlled Senate just returned to the House was met with disapproval by Speaker Mike Johnson.
Whatever the Senate did to our product, I am not thrilled about it. This is the process, and we understand it. The House Rules Committee met Tuesday afternoon to discuss the GOP megabill, and Johnson stated outside that they will be attempting to convince all of their members to vote yes.
It was inevitable that they would reach this point, according to Johnson, because of the huge stakes and rigorous timetable.
Representative Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) and other conservatives have made it clear they will not be voting for the domestic policy package that Republicans in the Senate narrowly approved Tuesday afternoon following an exhausting all-night vote-a-rama.
Instead of even contemplating the Republican plan put forth by the Senate, Norman told reporters outside the Rules committee that the House ought to return its first proposal to the Senate and depart from town.
When asked about the Senate Republicans, Norman advised them to “get serious,” which essentially meant sending back the House measure and leaving.
“That calculation is incorrect. According to Norman, they have invested an additional $670 billion.
In a room outside of the committee, Johnson gathered with Norman and fellow House Freedom Caucus member and Rules committee member Chip Roy (R-Texas) shortly after Norman made his remarks.
Johnson responded, “We’ll see what happens in the next 24 hours.” when asked if July 4 is still a reasonable goal for delivering the measure to President Trump’s desk.
