Major Turning Point: House GOP Advances Biden Impeachment Inquiry

The Republican-led House is almost ready to formally investigate President Joe Biden for possible impeachment.

On Thursday, Republicans unveiled the language of the resolution that would officially authorise their months-long probe, which mostly concentrated on the financial dealings of members of the president’s family. After Tuesday’s vote to forward the resolution in the Rules Committee, Republicans anticipate a floor vote next week.

Republicans on the moderate side are more united than they were a few months ago, citing the need for a vote as a legal necessity in light of the White House’s resistance to specific requests and subpoenas. However, there is still a sizeable segment of the GOP that is opposed to formally recommending Biden’s removal from office. The conservative wing of the conference is aiming to decide early in the new year whether to proceed with articles of impeachment.

“I am certain that we possess the necessary votes to launch an investigation into possible impeachment,” stated James Comer (R-Ky.), who is leading the investigation from the position of oversight.

However, this does not mean that all Republicans support the measure. One of the most outspoken members of his party who has spoken out against impeachment, Colorado Republican Ken Buck, said again this week that his position remains unchanged.

Despite this, Republicans are moving steadily towards a vote since numerous Republicans from swing districts have indicated they are fine with formalising the investigation as a necessary step to ensure that papers and interviews are produced as requested.

Although the Biden administration has maintained its compliance with numerous document demands, the White House has rejected some subpoenas by citing an opinion from the Justice Department during Trump’s administration. It was at that time that the Department of Justice stated that House impeachment investigations cannot proceed without a formal vote to authorise them.

Republicans think that formalising the investigation before year’s end will give them an advantage in any impending legal battles. The president’s son Hunter and brother James Biden are among those served with subpoenas.

If Hunter Biden does not show up for a closed-door deposition on December 13, Comer and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who chairs the Judiciary Committee, threatened on Wednesday to launch contempt of Congress charges against him.

The Biden family’s financial dealings are the primary target of the House Republicans’ probe, although it has covered a lot of ground. They are looking into the claims that the Obama administration inappropriately meddled in a federal investigation into Joe and Hunter Biden’s handling of secret documents, which has been under investigation by the federal government for years and is also under investigation by a special counsel.

Although Republicans have cast doubt on prior remarks made by Joe Biden and the White House, and they have discovered proof that Hunter Biden attempted to use his surname to bolster his own influence, they have failed to uncover concrete proof that Joe Biden’s actions during his presidency and vice presidency were intended to benefit his family’s business dealings.
