Mike Lonergan, the communications director for North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson’s gubernatorial campaign, reported that on Friday night, Robinson was taken to Northern Regional Hospital in Mount Airy “following an incident at a campaign event” where he sustained second-degree burns.
Robinson “is in good spirits, appreciates the outpouring of well wishes, and is excited to return to the campaign trail as scheduled first thing tomorrow morning,” Lonergan said, adding that Robinson is “in good spirits” himself.
A law enforcement source informed AWN that Robinson suffered burns in an accident that occurred at an automobile exhibition; no foul play was alleged.
According to a previously shared schedule and social media posts, North Carolina’s Republican candidate for governor, Robinson, had a busy campaign day on Friday, making multiple appearances across the state. He was on his way home when the tragedy happened at Mount Airy’s Mayberry Truck Show and Parade.
No other information regarding the incident has been supplied by the campaign.
Someone familiar with his campaign verified to AWN earlier on Friday night that NewsNation was the first to disclose on his hospitalization.
As the backlash from AWN’s coverage of the lieutenant governor’s harsh remarks on a pornographic website’s message board continues, Robinson is hospitalized.
Notable Republicans were quick to disassociate themselves from Robinson in the wake. Former President Donald Trump, who had endorsed Robinson before, failed to mention him during a recent campaign event in North Carolina.
In light of Robinson’s campaign executives’ resignations and the impending resignation of his senior staffer, national Republican groups have also cut off financial support for him.
A new AWN poll suggests that Robinson is losing ground in the race, even though the troubled contender is still campaigning. Among likely voters, Democrat Josh Stein had a 53% to 36% edge against Robinson, according to a poll issued Friday by SSRS following the publication of AWN KFile’s story.
