According to US media sources, the US House Select Committee looking into the Capitol riots is getting ready to vote on asking the Justice Department to press charges against former President Donald Trump.
Insurrection is one of the allegations that have been brought against Mr. Trump, Politico said on Friday, citing two unnamed people with knowledge of the situation.
According to NBC, the committee is actively contemplating proposing charges for rebellion, obstruction of a congressional official procedure, and conspiracy, but it has not made a final decision on criminal referrals.
NBC News has been informed by three distinct people with direct knowledge of the committee’s deliberations that a decision has not yet been reached, despite the fact that all three recommendations are plausible.
On Monday, the committee, which consists of two Republicans and seven Democrats, will vote on its findings and any criminal referrals.
In an unsuccessful attempt to overturn Mr. Trump’s loss in the 2020 election, thousands of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021.
While the congressional panel cannot indict Mr. Trump, if members so desire, they may elect to recommend a criminal case to the Justice Department.
The Justice Department, which is conducting its own investigation into the disturbance, may decide not to press charges despite a referral.
Over 140 police officers were hurt, and five people, including a police officer, died during or immediately after the conflict.
The committee’s open hearings, during which it interrogated former Republican aides and important White House personnel about the events preceding the incident, shed light on Mr. Trump’s role in inciting the historic assault on the Capitol.
Before they marched to the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Mr. Trump promised his mass of supporters that he would never concede the 2020 election and exhorted them to “fight like hell.”
At the conclusion of the committee’s final public hearing in October, the former president was subpoenaed.
Initially promising to comply, he later filed a lawsuit to prevent testifying or supplying any needed paperwork, and he skipped a deposition.
A wealth of information about the riots has been gathered by the committee, including transcripts from more than 1,000 interviews and millions of other documents.
Michael Fanone, a police officer who was on duty during the riots at the US Capitol, told Sky News in October that he initially believed he would die after being assaulted and hit with a Taser device at the base of his skull, which caused him to have a heart attack and sustain a traumatic brain injury.
Politicians were forced to escape for their life as crowds broke windows and rammed their way inside the Capitol during the incident.
