San Francisco’s top Democrats proclaimed Vice President Kamala Harris their “candidate with the most viable path to victory” on Friday, demanding that she succeed President Joe Biden as their party’s nominee in the event that Biden withdraws from the race.
Seven members of the San Francisco Democratic Central Committee have signed an open letter, but they refrain from directly asking Biden to resign in the face of mounting questions about his mental health in the aftermath of his dismal debate performance and a string of erratic public appearances.
However, such is the clear message conveyed by the leaders of the local party. They contend that Harris, who began her political career as San Francisco’s top prosecutor, is in the strongest position to unseat Trump in November.
This election is a battle for our democracy,” the letter declares. “We must act decisively now to establish the momentum needed to win, as there are only months until Election Day.”
Coming from one of the most liberal large cities in the country and the hometown of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, the letter adds to the increasing number of Democrats doubting Biden’s chances. It shows that some parts of the party’s grassroots are becoming more worried about Biden’s declining popularity in polls. Bilal Mahmood, a tech entrepreneur and candidate for supervisor, and city supervisor Matt Dorsey are among the signatories from San Francisco.
For the House, it’s a disaster waiting to happen. Mahmood informed AWN that the presidential ticket impacts the lower-ballot races. The situation becomes worse every week. We are not seeing improvement at any of the press conferences that are taking place.
