Arkansas Republican senator Tom Cotton made fun of the Biden administration’s efforts to meet with their Chinese counterparts, calling them “lovestruck teenagers.”
The Biden administration should cease swooning over its communist Chinese colleagues. During an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Cotton said of Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin’s trip to Singapore for a conference that Austin and his Chinese counterpart Li Shangfu also attended, “It’s embarrassing and it’s pathetic.”
After the annual defence and security symposium in Singapore, where Austin was in attendance, China unexpectedly slapped hands with the U.S. representative.
U.S. efforts to defuse tensions with China, which have been building for some time but have recently reached a boiling point after a Chinese surveillance balloon was observed flying over the U.S., included a handshake and a request for a meeting. After a Chinese warship approached an American destroyer and a Canadian frigate in the Taiwan Strait over the weekend, tensions between the two countries were once again visible.
But Cotton thinks those attempts “project weakness to China,” he said.
It gives them the green light to harass our planes and get within a few hundred yards of our ships. It gives them more incentive to fly surveillance balloons over the United States,” he said.
