Friday, after a politically catastrophic discussion that added age and acuity problems to President Joe Biden’s administration, Speaker Mike Johnson stated that the Cabinet should consider invoking the 25th Amendment.
While acknowledging that “there’s a lot of people asking about” invoking the amendment, Johnson ultimately left the decision to Biden’s Cabinet members when questioned about demands from inside his own conference to do so.
Members of the Cabinet, I implore you, to go deep within…. We expect them to fulfill their responsibilities to the American people just as much as we do our own. “These are moments of great significance,” Johnson informed the press.
When asked whether he meant to suggest that the 25th Amendment should be used, he responded, “If I were in the Cabinet… That conversation would take place amongst my Cabinet-level colleagues and me. Indeed, I would. We will observe their subsequent actions. It’s a major problem.
Before Johnson spoke, Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) announced on X that he would be introducing a resolution requesting that Vice President Kamala Harris “mobilize the principal officers of the Cabinet” under the 25th Amendment “to declare the [president] is unable to successfully discharge the duties and powers of his office.” Roy would then have to inform Congress that she was stepping in as acting president.
On Friday afternoon, Roy then proposed the resolution.
