Sunshine State Showdown: Trump's Mar-a-Lago Meeting with House Speaker Johnson

A Republican insider has confirmed that House Speaker Mike Johnson met with former President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Monday night.

Johnson was at Mar-a-Lago for a fundraiser for GOP Rep. Gus Bilirakis of Florida, according to two Trump advisers. The advisers indicated that Johnson and Trump just spoke briefly and that Johnson was not in Washington for the purpose of meeting with Trump.

Nearly a week after becoming the highest-ranking Republican to openly endorse Trump’s 2024 run for the White House, the two men met at the former president’s Florida resort. It was unclear from the outset of the meeting what was discussed between the two parties.

Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, is a loyal Trump supporter and was a token member of the impeachment committee against the previous president. On January 6, 2021, he cast a vote to uphold the challenge to the election results.

Johnson, who claims to have “wholeheartedly” embraced Trump, spoke to CNBC last week, calling himself “one of the closest allies that President Trump had in Congress” and praising Trump’s “phenomenal first term.”

Trump’s lead over his fellow Republicans continues to grow as he pursues the Republican nomination for president.

Trump backed the congressman in his successful bid for speaker last month after the former president had spoken out against the Republican conference’s brief speaker-nominee Tom Emmer, a Republican from Minnesota, calling him a “Globalist RINO” and saying that voting for him “would be a tragic mistake.”
