According to multiple individuals familiar with the decision, the top two Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, will endorse Kamala Harris in her quest for president as soon as Monday.
On Monday, Jeffries expressed his anticipation of meeting with Harris and Schumer to discuss the matter, but he refrained from endorsing her.
Jeffries expressed his excitement about meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris in person soon with Leader Schumer, saying, “Let me say that she has excited the community, the House Democratic Caucus, and the country. So I’m looking forward to sitting down with her.” He added, “We’ll have more to say about the path forward” after the meeting.
Prior to their meeting, Jeffries and Schumer issued a joint statement complimenting Harris for her efforts to receive the nomination thus far, but they did not endorse her. This came after Jeffries talked to reporters.
The two Democratic leaders expressed their admiration for Vice President Kamala Harris, saying that she is well on her way to fulfilling the Democratic National Committee’s expectations for a grassroots and transparent process for seeking the presidential nomination. From coast to coast, she is quickly gaining the backing of grassroots delegates.
“We are eagerly anticipating a face-to-face meeting with Vice President Harris in the near future as we join forces to bring the Democratic Party and the nation together,” Schumer and Jeffries stated.
Among the prominent Democrats in Washington who have spoken out in support of Harris’ campaign on Monday were the current leaders and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Pelosi made the announcement on behalf of Vice President Kamala Harris for president, expressing her “immensive pride” and “limitless optimism” for the future of the country. “On a personal, official, and political level, I wholeheartedly endorse Kamala Harris for president.”
Beginning on Sunday afternoon, when President Joe Biden endorsed Harris and withdrew his reelection effort, a steady stream of endorsements began pouring in for her candidacy. More and more Democratic senators and House members are endorsing Harris, and her support has been steadily growing since Monday.
In addition, she has the backing of the House Black Caucus, the House Hispanic Caucus, and the House Progressive Caucus.
