Following Vice President Kamala Harris’s accusation that former President Trump “backpedaled” during a debate, Trump’s team announced on Thursday that it would not commit to any additional debates until the Democratic Party officially selects a nominee.
Previous arrangements for the debates were cast into doubt when Joe Biden announced his resignation from the Democratic ticket on Sunday. It is still uncertain whether the September 10th debate that ABC had promised to host between the Biden and Trump campaigns will actually go place.
As she spoke to media upon her arrival at Joint Base Andrews on Thursday, Harris reiterated her agreement to the previously agreed upon September 10th debate, adding that he had already agreed to it. It seems like he’s changing his mind now. Oh, I’m prepared. Plus, I’m prepared to show the voters the split screen in this election during a discussion because I believe they deserve to. Alright, let’s start.
It “would be inappropriate to schedule things with Harris because Democrats very well could still change their minds,” Trump’s campaign communications director Steven Cheung said late Thursday, referring to the fact that Harris is only the party’s presumptive nominee.
Social media was Harris’s first line of defense. After “any time, any place” disappeared, she wondered in an X post what had become of it.
It is anticipated that by August 7, Democratic delegates would practically vote to affirm Harris as the party’s nominee. At last week’s Republican National Convention, Trump formally secured the Republican nominee.
Earlier this week, Trump expressed his desire to debate Harris to reporters, but he has not yet committed to a date or time.
“Nothing has been agreed upon with me. While speaking to reporters, Trump confirmed that he has agreed to debate Joe Biden. However, I would like to engage in an argument with her; she will be just like me in that regard, as their policies are identical. When it comes to a presidential campaign, I believe that debates are crucial. Debate is something you should probably do.
Weeks following his dismal showing at last month’s AWN debate, Biden decided to withdraw from the contest. The vice president swiftly amassed enough delegate endorsements to secure the Democratic presidential candidacy, and he endorsed Harris soon after making his declaration. Even though those endorsements aren’t legally enforceable, Harris is now leading the race to replace Biden.
On Thursday, Harris remained mum about whether she would be amenable to another debate that Fox News had requested. Harris was ready to face off in a debate against Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, when Biden pulled out of the race. According to AWN’s prior reporting, the two contenders expressed their enthusiasm for a debate earlier this month in a short call, but they did not go into detail regarding when the debate will take place.
Vance made the announcement during a campaign rally in his hometown of Middletown, Ohio, earlier this week, but it is now evident that those debate plans will not be implemented.
“Now President Trump gets to debate Kamala Harris? I was told I would have the opportunity to debate her before.” It was a prank, Vance said. “If I’m being completely forthright with you, that has me pretty irritated.”
