Donald Trump stated Thursday that if reelected, he will “fire” special counsel Jack Smith immediately.
Hugh Hewitt, a conservative talk radio host, asked Trump in an interview Thursday morning what he would do if he had to choose between firing Smith, who is overseeing the Justice Department’s investigations into Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and his possession of classified documents, and pardoning himself.
“It’s so easy, I would fire him within two seconds,” Trump remarked of Smith. The former president has long criticized the investigations into him as politically motivated witch hunts.
A federal grand jury accused Trump on four counts in the election investigation last year, but the case will not be tried before the 2024 election. If Trump wins, Smith, who was nominated by Merrick Garland, will most likely never be able to prosecute him. Smith is appealing despite the fact that the case involving confidential documents was rejected.
