Trump's Ohio Surprise: What's Behind the Sudden Springfield Visit?

On Wednesday night, former president Trump informed a gathering at a rally in Long Island, New York, that he is heading to Springfield, Ohio—the same place he said during the debate two weeks ago—where “people are resorting to eating dogs, cats and other household pets.”

He informed the rallygoers, “I’m going to Springfield, and I’m going to Aurora,” and said he intends to make the trips within the next two weeks.

While Trump did not name the race of the migrants he said were devouring Springfield dogs, his running mate JD Vance brought up the problem of Haitian unauthorized immigrants putting a strain on social services again and time again on X.

“Hell broke loose when Kamala Harris dumped twenty thousand Haitian migrants into a little Ohio town,” Vance had previously stated on X.

The blue state of New York was Trump’s target audience for Wednesday night’s Long Island rally. Trump made numerous campaign trips in the state between his court appearances for his New York civil fraud trial, and Wednesday night’s event was his second rally in the state.

Trump warned the audience that New York will be “turned into a third-world country, if it isn’t already” if Harris were to win the November election.

When he spoke at the Nassau Coliseum, which can accommodate 16,000 people, Trump expressed his gratitude to the police for foiling what seemed like an assassination attempt on him on Sunday. He also commended the woman who had taken a photo of the suspect’s car and expressed his desire to meet with her.

He then shifted his focus to his Democratic rivals, referring to them as “the radical left Democrat politicians and the fake news media.”

“The message is it’s time to stop the lies, stop the hoaxes, stop the smears, stop the lawfare or the fake lawsuits against me, and stop claiming your opponents will turn America into a dictatorship,” he added. “Cease and desist. I pose no danger to democracy, that much is true. Yeah, they are.

His 2017 tax cut capped state and local deductions at $10,000, but he promised to restore them.

Vendors selling a variety of Trump items waited outside the Coliseum before Trump’s visit. Trump coats bejeweled with jewels and golden cars bearing his likeness were on display at the party, which had music blasting from speakers. According to Trump’s team, 60,000 tickets were sought, making it one of the biggest rallies for Trump this year.

There was a long queue of people waiting outside the venue for hours before admission was allowed.

In his civil fraud trial in New York, Trump was originally supposed to be sentenced on the same day as his rally. After the presidential election, on November 26, the judge postponed the sentencing that had been scheduled for September 18, the date of the case.

In an effort to win over New Yorkers before his rally on Wednesday, Trump promised to roll back a tax scheme he had signed into law in 2017. As an example of his plan to “get SALT back,” Trump hinted at doing away with the deduction cap for state and local taxes in a social media post. Trump limited deductions to $10,000 in his 2017 tax bill.

In the continuing battle over the matter, the majority of New York’s Republican congressional delegation has been actively working to have the SALT deduction cap reversed on Capitol Hill.

Despite the fact that Trump’s new stance has been met with praise from many local Republicans, it coincides with the introduction of a number of tax cuts, which has prompted worries about substantial increases to the national debt.

“WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU LOSEIN’ TOO?” Select Trump as your candidate. In his social media post prior to his rally on Wednesday, the former president promised to “turn it around,” return SALT, reduce taxes, and do much more.

While campaigning in the predominantly Black and Hispanic South Bronx in May, Trump made a bold promise to turn the state red in an effort to win over the area’s voters.

There has never been an organization like ours in terms of support… Don’t think it’s insignificant because you reside in a blue city. If you live in a blue city, it will become red very fast, Trump warned.

In an effort to divert support from Democrats and bolster the competitiveness of contests farther down the ballot, the Trump campaign has actively courted New Yorkers this election year.

Following what appears to have been an attempt on Trump’s life when he was playing golf in West Palm Beach on Sunday, this is his first massive campaign rally. Nearly four thousand Michigan voters showed up to Trump’s town hall the day before; the crowd at the Nassau rally is projected to be four times larger.

Before and after his required court appearance during his seven-week hush money payment criminal trial earlier this year, Trump made a number of smaller campaign stops in New York City, highlighting different campaign messages at each location.

To draw attention to what he perceived as the inadequacy of Democratic prosecutors in New York to guarantee public safety during his prosecution, he paid a visit to a modest Harlem bodega that had been the site of a deadly stabbing two years prior in mid-April. Afterwards that month, he went to a midtown Manhattan construction site to brag about the support of union workers and working-class voters.
