Donald Trump’s announcement on Wednesday that he has chosen his running partner immediately caused quite a stir. Even his own campaign advisors were caught unawares by the announcement, throwing Trump supporters into a political limbo as they try to speculate about his intended target.
When selecting a vice president, the president is quite particular about the traits he wants. On Wednesday, Trump aide Jason Miller stated, “We’re gonna leave that to him” when asked about specific names.
I surveyed Trump backers in Iowa this week and asked them who they would choose as a running mate for the former president in the event that he tightens his grip on the nomination. The range of their responses was wide.
A brief compilation of some of the names mentioned:
“Kristi Noem, the female governor of South Dakota,” said Jesse Stumbaugh of Norwalk, Iowa. The woman would be powerful.
“Tim Scott from South Carolina,” says Indianola, Iowa’s Kent Deberg. I think he’d be a good choice.
Kari Lake, “Rob Thompson of Newton, Iowa says. The name is Kristi Noem. Thank you, Vivek.
“I like the idea of a female running mate,” says Dan Howell of Pleasant Hill, Iowa. Reynolds, Noem, and Stefanik are names that I am familiar with. It would set her up for another eight years in office, and I think it’s about time we had a female politician at that level.
Howell, Robin: “Stefanik.”
An Iowan named Marsha Hortner: “Kari Lake.”
