In order to guarantee that Joe Biden appears on the Ohio ballot this November, the Democratic National Committee declared on Tuesday that they will nominate him through a “virtual roll call” vote prior to the August convention.
The official presidential nomination of the Democratic National Committee was scheduled to take place at a convention in Chicago two weeks before to the August 7th vote deadline in Ohio. Secretary of state Frank LaRose, a Republican, issued a warning last week that Biden would not be included on the state’s ballot unless lawmakers in the state extended the time for accessing the ballot to after the Democratic convention. Although the date for the virtual roll call has not been confirmed, the DNC did say a few days later that it will speed up the nominating process.
The Republican Party in Ohio has already decided that Joe Biden should be on the ballot in their state and every state. According to DNC head Jaime Harrison, Democrats will land the plane alone because they have consistently failed to do so when the time has come. “Ohioans will be able to cast their ballots for the presidential candidate of their choosing through a virtual roll call, which will protect our democracy from Republican attempts to undermine it through ineptitude or partisan tactics.”
The virtual nomination will mimic the party’s procedure from the 2020 convention, when the COVID-19 epidemic disrupted most of the events. The Democratic National Committee has confirmed that the party’s gathering in Chicago would proceed as scheduled.
Every election cycle, there are a few of states whose deadlines for certifying ballots do not coincide with the party’s formal convention for nominating candidates. In most cases, the state legislature or secretary of state will discreetly fix these discrepancies.
Mike DeWine, the Republican governor of Ohio, has convened a special session to legislate the inclusion of Joe Biden on the ballot. However, this move will only be approved by GOP lawmakers if it is accompanied with a campaign finance bill that bans foreign funding to ballot-issue campaigns at the state and municipal levels.
